Medical Colleges in Meghalaya 2026 – MBBS, NEIGRIHMS & Admission Guide

Meghalaya has a single medical institution β€” the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), Shillong, established in 2008 as an autonomous institute under North Eastern Hill University. With only 50 MBBS seats annually, it is one of the smallest state seat pools in India, but its admission structure is notably more complex than most states. You can explore NEIGRIHMS and any other listed institutions directly above.

    A Unique Four-Way Seat Split

Unlike the standard 85% State Quota / 15% AIQ split used across most Indian states, NEIGRIHMS divides its 50 MBBS seats into distinct quota pools, each with different eligibility and a different counselling pathway:

    • All India Quota (8 seats) β€” the smallest AIQ allocation of any Indian state, filled through MCC counselling and open to NEET-qualified candidates from anywhere in India
    • Meghalaya State Quota (14–15 seats) β€” reserved exclusively for holders of a valid Meghalaya Permanent Resident Certificate (PRC), counselled offline directly by NEIGRIHMS
    • North East Open Category (NEOC) (18 seats) β€” open to permanent residents of any of the 8 northeastern states (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura), not just Meghalaya

Within the Meghalaya State Quota, roughly 80% is reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates (predominantly Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo communities), reflecting the state's tribal demographic makeup.

How Admission Works β€” Not Fully Online

Unlike most states, NEIGRIHMS's State Quota and NEOC counselling is conducted offline by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), Meghalaya β€” candidates must apply through meghealth.gov.in, then attend in-person document verification and seat selection at designated centres in Shillong or Tura. Only the 8 AIQ seats follow the standard centralized MCC online process.
