About Diplomate of National Board
DNB (Diplomate of National Board) is a postgraduate medical qualification awarded by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), recognized as equivalent to MD/MS by the NMC. DNB programs are offered in accredited hospitals and medical colleges across India, including private hospitals, which makes it unique — students can train in top tertiary care hospitals that may not have their own medical college. The DNB program lasts 3 years for broad specialities (like DNB General Medicine, DNB Surgery, DNB Paediatrics) and 2 years for super-specialities under the post-MD/DNB route. Training is intensive, hospital-based, and structured around the NBEMS curriculum. Students must clear both theory and practical examinations conducted by NBEMS to receive the DNB degree. DNB is particularly popular because it allows candidates to train in premier institutions like Apollo, Medanta, Fortis, AIIMS-affiliated hospitals, and Tata Memorial Hospital. Seats are available across 60+ specialties. DNB holders have the same rights as MD/MS holders for teaching and practice, including eligibility for faculty posts after fulfilling experience criteria.
