Medical Colleges in Nagaland 2026 – MBBS, NIMSR Kohima Guide

Nagaland is home to India's newest state medical college — the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR), Kohima, also known as Kohima Medical College. Until 2023, Nagaland had no medical college of its own; NIMSR received its Letter of Permission from the National Medical Commission in April 2023 and admitted its historic first MBBS batch in September 2023 — making it one of the most recently established government medical colleges in the country. You can explore NIMSR and any other listed institutions directly above.

    About NIMSR Kohima

NIMSR is affiliated with Nagaland University and offers 100 MBBS seats annually. While its administrative and academic buildings are located in Phriebagie, Kohima, clinical training takes place at the Naga Hospital, Kohima, which serves as its teaching hospital. The college's foundation dates back to 2014, when the Central government sanctioned ₹189 crore for construction, though the project faced delays before finally opening in 2023.

    How Admission Works

MBBS admission is based on NEET UG rank, with state counselling conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Nagaland:

    • 85% Nagaland State Quota — counselled by DTE Nagaland, requiring Nagaland domicile eligibility
    • 15% All India Quota (AIQ) — filled through MCC, open to candidates from any state

NIMSR currently offers no Management or NRI quota seats — missing the merit cutoff here means looking at colleges in other states, since there is no backup quota within this single institution.

Before NIMSR — How Nagaland Students Got Medical Seats

Prior to 2023, Nagaland domicile students seeking MBBS had no in-state option and relied on the Central Pool quota or reserved Nagaland seats in medical colleges of other states, alongside the standard 15% AIQ route through MCC. NIMSR's establishment marked a historic shift, allowing Nagaland candidates an in-state government college option for the first time.

    Courses Available

    • UG: MBBS only — Nagaland currently has no BDS, BAMS, or BHMS colleges
    • PG: Not yet offered at NIMSR, as the institution is still building out its academic programs following its first MBBS batch
