Medical College in Sikkim 2026 β MBBS, SMIMS Gangtok Guide
Sikkim's medical education is served by a single institution β Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), Gangtok, a constituent college of Sikkim Manipal University, established in 2000. Unlike most single-college states, SMIMS is technically a private institution, yet it functions with a strong state-government partnership for local students. Clinical training takes place at the 500+ bed Central Referral Hospital and STNM Hospital in Gangtok.
A Unique Fee-Subsidy Model for State Quota Students
Unlike typical government colleges where the institution itself is state-run, SMIMS is private β but the Government of Sikkim sponsors approximately 75% of the total course fee for students admitted under the Sikkim State Quota, dramatically reducing the effective cost for domicile candidates at what is otherwise an expensive private college (full course fees can run to βΉ75+ lakh).
How Admission Works β SMIMS Doesn't Use MCC for UG
MBBS admission at SMIMS is based on NEET UG rank, but the college does not participate in MCC's central AIQ counselling for undergraduate seats β unlike almost every other single-college state. Instead:
- Sikkim State Quota seats are counselled directly by the State Government of Sikkim, requiring Sikkim domicile eligibility, with candidates applying separately to SMIMS after the NEET UG result
- General/Management and NRI Quota seats are filled through SMIMS's own direct counselling process, administered by Sikkim Manipal University
For postgraduate (MD/MS) admission, however, SMIMS does participate in the standard 50% MCC AIQ / 50% institutional split, unlike its UG process.
Courses Available
- UG: MBBS (approximately 100 seats), plus B.Sc Nursing and other allied health programs
- PG: MD/MS across multiple disciplines, admitted through NEET PG
