    How MBBS Admission Works

    MBBS admission is based on NEET UG rank, with state counselling conducted by the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training (DGME), UP at upneet.gov.in:

    • Government colleges: 85% UP State Quota and 15% All India Quota (AIQ) via MCC
    • Private colleges: 100% of seats filled through DGME's state counselling, purely on NEET merit — UP is a genuine "Open State" with no separate high-priced management quota layer
    • Deemed universities located in UP admit exclusively through MCC, regardless of physical location in the state

    Most newer state government medical colleges established since 2021 under the "One District One Medical College" initiative are affiliated with Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU), Lucknow, standardizing curriculum and clinical training statewide.

    A Major Recent Policy Change — Seat-Leaving Penalty Abolished

    In a significant and recent shift, DGME UP abolished the financial penalty for leaving an MBBS seat midway during counselling — a notable relief for students compared to the strict seat-leaving penalties still enforced in many other states.

    No Rural Bond for Private College Students

    Students admitted to private medical colleges in UP are generally exempt from any state-mandated compulsory rural service bond, allowing immediate pursuit of postgraduate studies or international licensing exams like USMLE, PLAB, or AMC without state-imposed delays. (Government college students may still have bond obligations — always verify current terms with DGME.)
