Medical Colleges in West Bengal 2026 – MBBS, WBMCC & Admission Guide

West Bengal has a strong, predominantly government-led medical education network — 25 government medical colleges (including Medical College Kolkata, RG Kar Medical College, and Calcutta National Medical College) and around 10 private colleges. AIIMS Kalyani, a central institution, operates separately and is not part of the state's regular counselling count. You can explore the complete, filterable list of medical colleges in West Bengal directly above.

How MBBS Admission Works — WBMCC

MBBS and BDS admission is based on NEET UG rank, with state counselling conducted by the West Bengal Medical Counselling Committee (WBMCC) under the Directorate of Medical Education, Kolkata:

    • Government colleges: 85% West Bengal State Quota via WBMCC and 15% AIQ via MCC
    • Private colleges: 100% of seats via WBMCC, split into State Quota, Management Quota, and NRI Quota
    • AIIMS Kalyani: 100% MCC-administered, entirely separate from WBMCC
    • ESIC Medical College, Joka is included in WBMCC's government count, admitting under Government Quota and Insured Persons (IP) Quota

A Notably Strict Domicile Verification Process

West Bengal requires proof of 10 years of continuous residency to claim State Quota eligibility, verified through one of three specific proforma types: Proforma A1 (10-year WB residency), Proforma A2 (10-year residency plus Class 12 completed in WB), or Proforma B (parent's 10-year WB residency with permanent address). Each requires certification by a designated authority (headmaster/principal for A2, or an authorized official for others) — a more elaborate documentation process than most other states.

A Unique In-Service Reservation for PG Seats

For postgraduate (MD/MS/PG Diploma) State Quota seats, West Bengal reserves 40% of degree seats and 50% of diploma seats specifically for in-service doctors and teachers already working in the state health department (WBMES/WBHS/WBPHAS/WBDES/WBDS cadres) — a distinctive carve-out favoring the state's own serving medical officers, uncommon in most other states' PG reservation structures.

    Post-MBBS Bond

West Bengal mandates a 1-year compulsory service bond for government medical college graduates, with fee forfeiture and financial penalties for mid-course discontinuation.

    Courses Available

    • UG: MBBS and BDS across government and private institutions; AYUSH courses (BAMS/BHMS/BUMS/BNYS) also counselled through WBMCC using NEET UG scores
    • PG: MD/MS/PG Diploma and DNB, with significant in-service reservation as noted above
    • Super Speciality: DM/MCh available at select government institutions
