    About Master of Dental Surgery

MDS is the postgraduate specialization degree in dental surgery, allowing BDS graduates to develop expertise in a specific branch of dentistry. The course involves advanced theoretical study, extensive clinical training, and original research culminating in a thesis. Specializations available under MDS include Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopaedics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics, Oral Pathology, Oral Medicine, and Pedodontics. The 3-year MDS program is structured with the first year focusing on basic sciences and theory, and subsequent years dedicated to advanced clinical practice. Students are posted in specialized departments, perform complex procedures independently, attend interdisciplinary conferences, and conduct research. The program is regulated by the Dental Council of India (DCI). Admission is through NEET MDS (conducted separately from NEET PG for medical students). Government dental college seats are extremely limited and competition is fierce. Private dental colleges offer more seats but at significantly higher fees (₹5–25 lakh/year).
