About Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery
BAMS is India's traditional medical degree rooted in the ancient science of Ayurveda. The course blends classical Ayurvedic knowledge with modern medical sciences, training students in diagnosing and treating diseases through natural, holistic methods. Subjects covered include Ayurvedic principles (Samhitas), Dravyaguna (Pharmacognosy), Rasashastra, Kayachikitsa (internal medicine), Shalya (surgery), and modern anatomy, physiology, and pathology. The 5.5-year program spans 4.5 years of study plus a 1-year internship at an Ayurvedic hospital. BAMS graduates are recognized as registered medical practitioners in India and can prescribe AYUSH medicines, perform minor procedures, and run their own Ayurvedic clinics. Admission is through NEET UG, with seats available under AYUSH quota separately from allopathy seats. Central and state government BAMS colleges are regulated by the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM).
